How to Tell if You Have an FPE or Zinsco Panel

Federal Pacific reads "FPE" on the panel label with red-striped Stab-Lok breakers that push straight onto the bus. Zinsco reads "Zinsco" or "Sylvania" with multi-colored breaker handles and an aluminum bus that corrodes where the breakers seat. When a label is painted over or breaker brands are mixed, a licensed electrician pulls the deadfront and reads the bus and breaker stampings for a definitive answer.

Why Federal Pacific and Zinsco Panels Are Dangerous

The hazard is failure-to-trip. FPE Stab-Lok breakers have been independently measured failing to open on a real overload or short 25 to 40 percent of the time, and Zinsco panels fail through bus corrosion that fuses breakers to the bus. Neither can be made safe with parts, because the failure lives in the bus-and-breaker design itself.
