If your Seattle-area home was built or rewired between roughly 1965 and 1973, there is a real chance the branch circuits feeding your outlets and switches are single-strand aluminum rather than copper. Builders switched to aluminum during a copper price spike in those years, and it shows up constantly in the mid-century stock we work in across Wallingford, Ballard, and the north-end Seattle neighborhoods. Aluminum was never the problem on its own. The problem is what happens at the connections, and in the Seattle market, whether the home stays insurable.
How to Tell If You Have Aluminum Branch Wiring
Single-strand aluminum branch wiring was used almost only in homes built or rewired between about 1965 and 1973. At the panel and in the attic, basement, or crawl space, aluminum conductors read dull silver rather than the reddish tone of copper, and the cable or conductor is often stamped AL or ALUMINUM. Warning signs at the devices matter too: warm or discolored cover plates, flickering lights, outlets that stop working intermittently, or a faint burning smell near a receptacle. Before we visit we pull the Seattle DCI permit history and cross-check the King County Recorder so we know what was permitted and finaled.
Why Seattle Insurers Flag Aluminum Wiring
Single-strand aluminum branch wiring routinely triggers a decline or non-renewal in the Seattle market, the same way knob-and-tube, a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel, and a sub-100-amp service do. After the 2023 non-renewal wave hit Washington, carriers began requiring a documented electrical condition report before binding or renewing on pre-1980 homes. What clears the flag is proof of remediation: a permitted, inspector-finaled AlumiConn or COPALUM repair on every device, or a full copper rewire, with the closeout paperwork. If your home also still has original knob-and-tube, see our knob-and-tube wiring in Seattle guide for how the two are handled together.
AlumiConn, COPALUM, or a Full Rewire
All three are legitimate fixes, and the right one depends on scope and access. AlumiConn is a UL-listed set-screw lug: at each device the aluminum conductor and a short copper pigtail are landed and torqued to spec, and the copper pigtail connects to the receptacle or switch. COPALUM is a factory-supervised cold-weld crimp the CPSC considers a permanent repair, but it needs a specially certified installer and tool. A full copper rewire removes the aluminum branch circuits entirely and is the cleanest answer when the aluminum is extensive, the terminations are already damaged, or the panel needs to come up to code at the same time. See our panel upgrades and whole-home rewiring service for the full scope. We survey your home and tell you honestly which path fits before quoting.
